Hackney Empire, London. The Hackney Empire was designed by the celebrated theatre architect Frank Matcham. It first opened its doors in 1900. In its heyday the theatre was a popular music hall venue, but by the 1960s it had become a bingo hall. The Hackney Empire reopened as a theatre in 1986 and underwent a major refurbishment completed in 2004. Today it is particularly well known as a comedy venue.
