Thames sailing barge, Snape, Suffolk. This type of sailing vessel developed in the 19th century, carrying cargo on the Thames Estuary and further afield along the east and south coasts. By the turn of the 20th century more than 2000 of the vessels were registered, but their numbers declined until the last cargo was carried by one in 1969.
