Ambrose Burnside, Union Army general in the American Civil War, 1862-1867. Burnside (1824-1881) commanded the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Fredericksburg, suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of General Robert E Lee with over 12,000 casualties. His distinctive facial hair gave rise to the term 'sideburns'.
