Letter from Dr Samuel Johnson to Warren Hastings, 29th January 1781. Letter from Johnson to Warren Hastings, Governor-General of Bengal, asking for his support to a projected translation of Ariosto by John Hoole, Auditor at the India House. Hoole's translation of Ariosto's Orlando Furioso was published in 1783, Warren Hastings subscribing for ten copies. From the third series of Facsimiles of royal, historical, literary and other autographs in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum: Series I-V, (London, 1899).
