Professor Edward Frankland, 1880. He became professor of chemistry in 1850 at the Royal College of Engineers, and in 1865 became professor of chemistry at the Royal School of Mines. He has been accredited with devising the theory of valence. He also undertook research into water purification and town drainage. He was knighted in 1897.
