Birket Foster, member of the Watercolour Society, 1880. At the age of sixteen he became an apprentice for Mr Landells who was a well known wood engraver. After his apprenticeship he turned to illustration, and in the 1840s he illustrated several children's books, and was an illustrator for the Illustrated London News. In 1860 he became a member of the Watercolour Society. He also exhibited several oil paintings at the Royal Academy between 1869-1877. In 1876 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Berlin.
