Thomas Hughes, 1880. The author of Tom Brown's School Days, first published in 1856. In 1861 he went on to publish Tom Brown at Oxford. He was one of the founder members of the Society for Promoting Working Men's Associations. He became an MP for Lambeth in 1865-1868, and appointed a member of the queens' counsel in 1869.
