Reverend John Saul Howson, Dean of Chester, 1882. Howson (1816-1885) was a prominent biblical scolar and archaeologist. As Dean of Chester from 1867-1885, he oversaw the restoration of the Cathedral as well as the endowment of the King's School for boys. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
