William Ballantine, Serjeant-at-Law, 1882. Ballantine (1812-1887) became a Serjeant-at-Law in 1856. He enjoyed a reputation as a formidable cross-examiner of witnesses in court and was involved in some of the most celebrated cases of the day, commanding very high fees. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
