James Atlay, Bishop of Hereford, 1878. James Atlay became Bishop of Hereford in 1868, after having previously been vicar of Leeds. He was regarded as a popular, hard-working Bishop who made a point of officiating in every church within his large but sparsely populated diocese. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
