Sir George Jessel, Master of the Rolls, 1881. Jessel (1824-1883) was called to the bar at Lincolns Inn in 1847. He entered Parliament as a Liberal MP for Dover in 1868, and was appointed Solicitor-General in 1871, after having impressed Gladstone with two speeches in the House on the Bankruptcy Bill. In 1873 Jessel succeeded Lord Romilly as Master of the Rolls, a position he held until his death in 1883.
