Pagan priests welcome Sisinnius at the gates of Paris, 1317. Manuscript illustration from a work on the life of St Denis (died c258 AD), written by Yves, a monk at the Abbey of St Denis. The book depicts the torture and martyrdom of the saint by the Roman governor Fescenninus Sisinnius. The lower part of each scene depicts scenes on the River Seine. Here, wheat is transported in boats covered in tarpaulins. From the collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
