German soldiers with Russian prisoners, Russia, 1941. Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, was launched on 22 June 1941. As the Germans advanced eastwards they took vast numbers of prisoners as they outflanked and encircled whole Rusian armies. Behind the lines the SS began rounding up the Jewish population and communist political commissars.
