Burned out cars, Place de la Concorde, liberation of Paris, August 1944. After just over four years of occupation, the Germans surrendered the city to the French 2nd Armoured Division on 25 August 1944. The previous week saw fighting on the streets as the French Resistance and elements of the general population rose up in revoly against their occupiers.
