An uncertain assault, Battle of Moscow, 1942. The Battle of Moscow was fought between October 1941 and January 1942. At the outset of the battle the leading German army units had reached a point just 20 miles from the centre of the Soviet capital, but were stopped by a combination of exhaustion and the onset of bitterly cold weather. The Russians then proceeded to launch a counter-offensive with fresh troops, many of them Siberians used to the harsh winter conditions. By the battle's conclusion, the Germans had been forced back up to 150 miles from Moscow, their first major retreat of the war. A print from Signal, 1942. Signal was a magazine published by the German Third Reich from 1940 through 1945.
