'View of Mount Barkal', Sudan, 1842-1845. Jebel Barkal is a mountain 400 kilometres north of Khartoum. In c1450 BC the Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose III extended his kingdom to the area and founded the city of Napata, which later became the capital of the kingdom of Kush. From the collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris.
