Al-Rifai Mosque, Cairo, Egypt, 1928. Built by the Khedives of Egypt, the Royal Mosque of Al Rifai was commissioned in 1869 but not completed until 1912. It was conceived as a means of proving that the Khedives could rival the power and achievements of the Mamelukes, the builders of the adjacent Sultan Hassan Mosque which was built in the 14th century. Published in Promenades à travers Le Caire, 1928.
