Egyptian Fayum portrait of a man, Roman Period. 2nd century AD. Fayum are personalised mummy portraits that were produced in Egypt during the Roman period, from the 1st to the 3rd century. They are encaustic paintings, made with hot, pigmented wax on wooden panels, which were inserted into the mummy of the deceased person.
