The royal princesses preaching the holy war in Madagascar, 1894. Madagascar was an independent kingdom ruled by Queen Ravanolova III of the Merina dynasty. France had invaded the island in 1883, precipitating the First Franco-Hova War, and still had colonial designs on Madagascar. The French invaded again in 1895 (Second Franco-Hova War) and formally annexed Madagascar the following year. Ravanolova III was forced into exile in Algeria. A print from the Le Petit Journal, 9th December 1894.
