A French captive, Tonkin, Vietnam, 1895. France assumed control of Vietnam after the Franco-Chinese War of 1884-1885 and divided the territiory into three sections, Tonkin bein gthe northernmost. Many Vietnamese resisted their colonial rulers for the next 70 years until the French were forced out of Indochina after the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
