General Marchand inspecting trenches, Champagne, France, World War I, 1915. Jean-Baptiste Marchand was commander of the 10th Colonial Infatry Division. He was severely wounded by a machine-gun bullet that struck him in the chest during the Second Battle of Champagne on 25 September 1915, but recovered and returned to active duty.
