Winfield Scott Hancock , Union general, 1862-1867. Hancock (1824-1886) was instrumental in the Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. After the Civil War he entered politics and ran as the Democratic candidate for president in 1880, losing narrowly to James Garfield.
