John Bell Hood, Confederate general, 1862-1867. Hood (1831-1879) had a reputation for bravery, being one of the few Civil War generals who personally led his troops into combat on the field of battle. He lost the use of an arm after being wounded at Gettysburg, and had a leg amputated as a result of the wounds he suffered at Chickamauga. He returned to active duty however, being appointed commander of the Army of the Tennessee in July 1864. An engraving from volume III of The War with the South : a History of the Late Rebellion, by Robert Tomes, Benjamin G Smith, New York, Virtue & Yorston, 3 Volumes, 1862-1867.
