George Stoneman, Union cavalry general, 1862-1867. Whilst in command of the cavalry corps of the Army of the Ohio, Stoneman (1822-1894) was captured by the Confederates at Macon, Georgia, in 1864 during the Atlanta Campaign. This earned him the distiction of being the most senior Union officer to be taken prioner during the Civil War. He later went on th serve as Governor of California from 1883-1887.
