George Henry Thomas, Union general, 1862-1867. One of the principal Union commanders in the western theatre of the Civil War, Thomas (1816-1870) earned the nickname the Rock of Chickamauga for the defensive stand by his men at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863 that prevented a rout.
