Andrew Johnson, 16th President of the United States, 1862-1867. Johnson (1808-1875) succeeded to the presidency upon the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. His term lasted from 1865 to 1869. In 1867 and 1868 two attempts were made to impeach him, but both failed.
