John Dormer, country gentleman, late 17th-early 18th century. Whig supporter Dormer (1669-1719) was a member of the Kit-Cat Club. For club members, social status was less important than political opinions so that Dormer, who was not an aristocrat and didn't hold high office, could mix with prominent titled men and politicians.
