Alexander Mackenzie, second Prime Minister of Canada, c1890. The leader of the Canadian Liberal Party, Mackenzie (1822-1892) was asked to form a government in 1873 when the Conservative administration of John A Macdonald fell in the wake of the Pacific scandal. He won the general election the following year and continued in office until Macdonald and the Conservatives returned to power after the 1878 election.
