Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor from 1576-1612. A member of the House of Habsburg, Rudolf was King of Hungary (1572-1608) and Bohemia (1575-1611) and Archduke of Austria (1576-1608), as well as Holy Roman Emperor. A long debilitating war with Turkey and a revolt by his Hungarian subjects led to him being forced to give up his kingdoms and effective power to his younger brother Matthias, who also succeeded him as Holy Roman Emperor when he died in 1612.
