Equestrian statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy, Vienna. Regarded as one of the outstanding military strategists of his time, Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736) was one of the allied commanders in the War of the Spanish Succession. Together with John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) he participated in the victory at Blenheim. He also fought against the Turks, notably taking Belgrade from them in 1718, and went on to become Governor of the Austrian Netherlands.
