Peru's Olympic football team in action, Berlin Olympics, 1936. Peru were involved in an astonishing controversy at the Berlin Olympic football tournament. After they beat Austria, the eventual silver medallists, after extra time in the quarter-finals, the Austrians protested that they had been assaulted by Peruvian players and the pitch had been invaded by a specator with a revolver. FIFA ordered the match to be replayed and the Peruvians refused to do so, withdrawing their entire Olympic team in protest. Back in Peru there were riots with the German consulate stoned by protesters. A print from Olympia 1936, Die Olympischen Spiele 1936, Volume II, Cigaretten-Bilderdienst, Hamburg, 1936.
