Vera Hrubá, Czech figure skater, Winter Olympic Games, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, 1936. Vera Hruba finished 17th in the women's individual competition. During the games she met and insulted Hitler, who asked her if she would like to skate for the swastika, to which she replied that she would rather skate ON the swastika. Escaping Prague before the arrival of the Nazi invaders in 1939 she emigrated to the US, carving out a new career as a Hollywood film actress with the screen name Vera Ralston.
