The Colossus of Rhodes, 18th century. The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was a lighthouse in the form of a giant statue of the god Helios, marking the entrance to the harbour by holding a flaming torch in its hand. It was constructed in c292-280 BC. The statue broke off at the knees when a powerful earthquake struck Rhodes in 226 BC.
