Dr Philippe Grenier, the first Muslim Deputy in the French National Assembly, 1897. Grenier, a Deputy representing Pontarlier, converted to Islam in 1896. He was not re-elected in 1898, partly due to his opposition to the consumption of absinthe, which was manufactured in Pontarlier. An illustration from Le Petit Journal, 24th January 1897.
