Boer delegation received by General Gallieni, Governor of Madagascar, 1902. When the Boer War ended in 1902, some of the Boer leaders who wanted to continue the fight went into exile in Madagascar. Joseph Simon Gallieni (1849-1916), the island's governor at the time, was a French soldier, most active as a military commander and administrator in the French colonies who finished his career during the First World War.
