Smeaton's Eddystone Lighthouse, Devon, c1850. Built on the treacherous Eddystone Rocks by John Smeaton 1n 1756-1759, this was the third lighthouse on the site, 14 miles south of Plymouth, the previous two having been destroyed by storm and fire respectively. It stood until 1882, when it was replaced by the present lighthouse. Illustration from the book Old England's Worthies, (London, c1850).
