Ivory immortal with reed pipes, late Ming dynasty, China, 1550-1644. His elegant bearded figure is in the slightly curved shape of the tusk. His flowing robes have long, pendulent sleeves that cover the whole body other than the hands which hold the pipes to his upper left chest. His head has two long streamers down the back. The top of the head and where the feet would have protruded is cross-hatched to take the original ebony sections (now missing) which would have been used for the protruding slippers and cap.
