William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, 18th century British judge and politician, (1836). Murray (1705-1793) played a key role in bringing about the abolition of slavery in England. His ruling in the Somersett's Case in 1772 declared that slavery was unlawful in Britain (though not elsewhere in the British Empire).
