Cardinal Cisneros, Spanish Cardinal, inquisitor and statesman, (1836). Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros (1436-1517) rose from humble origins to become one of the most powerful figures in Spain. He was Grand Inquisitor and twice served as regent of Spain. He compelled the Muslims of Granada to convert to Christianity or be exiled from Spain, and advocated Crusades against Islamic North Africa.
