General Nathaniel Prentice Banks, American politician and soldier, 1862-1867. Banks (1816-1894) served as Speaker of the US House of Representatives from 1856-1857. After the outbreak of the Civil War President Lincoln appointed him a Major-General of Volunteers despite the fact that he was not a graduate of the US Military Academy.
