General Franz Sigel, Union general in the American Civil War, 1862-1867. Sigel (1824-1902) emigrated to America after fighting in the army of Baden during the 1848 Revolution in Germany. He commanded forces largely made up of fellow German immigrants during the Civil War. He enjoyed some early successes as a general, notably at Pea Ridge in March 1862, but his reputation declined after a series of defeats by a smaller, more mobile army commanded by 'Stonewall' Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. An engraving from volume I of The War with the South : a History of the Late Rebellion, by Robert Tomes, Benjamin G Smith, New York, Virtue & Yorston, 3 Volumes, 1862-1867.
