Death of General Lyon, Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, 10 August 1861, (1862-1867). Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861) was given command of the Union Army of the West on 2 July 1861. Engaging a numerically superior Confederate army at Wilson's Creek, he became the first Union general to be killed during the American Civil War.
