'Southwark Fair', 1733. A crowd is enjoying the festivities in Borough High Street, near St George the Martyr, Southwark, London. Among the figures are a group of actors falling from a stage to the left, a man on a tight-rope behind, a performing dog and musicians in the foreground. The fair was held for two weeks in September, and was abolished in 1762. Illustration from Social Caricature in the Eighteenth Century ... With over two hundred illustrations by George Paston [pseudonym of Emily Morse Symonds], (London, 1905).
