Christopher Columbus before the Council at Salamanca, Spain, 1487. Columbus (1451-1506) making an unsuccessful attempt to persuade the council appointed by King Ferdinand II of Spain to fund his proposed voyage to discover a westerly route to Asia. Columbus' persistent lobbying finally paid off in 1492 when Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain agreed to support his project.
