Edward Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby, 19th century British statesman, (1900). The son of a prime minister, Stanley (1826-1893) also embarked on a political career. He held various ministerial posts, usually in the area of foreign policy, including two spells as Foreign Secretary (1866-1868 and 1874-1878). Originally a Conservative, he later switched his political allegiance to the Liberals, then the Liberal Unionists.
