Ajanta caves, Vihara, Maharashtra, India, c1925. Ajanta is a village in the hills of central Maharashtra. The area contains 30 caves, the earliest dating from 200 BC to 200 AD which comprise halls and dormitories with walls covered with fresco paintings. The caves were discovered in 1817 and excavated by Buddhists. Cigarette card produced by the Westminster Tobacco Co Ltd, Indian Empire, 2nd series.
