William Lenthall, Speaker of the House of Commons, c1642 (1893). Born at Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, Lenthall (1591-1662) became Speaker of the House of Commons in the Long Parliament of 1640. When, in 1642, Charles I entered the Commons to arrest five opposition leaders, Lenthall refused to reveal their whereabouts.
