Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli, 15th century Italian cosmographer and mathematician, (1901). Toscanelli (1397-1482) produced a map proposing a westward route to Asia that Columbus took with him on his voyage on which he discovered the previously unknown continent of America. Toscanelli also performed important work in calculating the orbits of comets.
