'Prince Frederick Louis of Wales, eldest son of George II', c1740s. Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-1751) was the eldest son of George II and heir to the throne. He quarrelled constantly with his father, to the extent that George II considered possible means of bypassing him for the succession. In the event, Frederick died before George and the throne eventually passed to his own eldest son, George III.
