Where James Boswell first met Dr Johnson, London, (1912). On 16 May 1763, Scottish diarist and man of letters James Boswell (1740-1795) first met English author, critic and lexicographer Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) in the back shop of Tom Davies the bookseller at 8 Russell Street, Covent Garden. The two became friends and made a trip round the Scottish Hebrides. Boswell wrote a biography of Johnson: Life of Johnson (1791).
